A Bit Crack gets storytellers from many parts of the UK, and in March we were treated to a storyteller from Belgium called Tom Van Meighen who had just arrived by boat in North Shields to begin a UK wide tour.

The theme of the night was the life and times of Edgar Allan Poe. Tom started with an insight into how a tragic life influenced his poetry and story writing and parallels with his own life. He then gave a wonderful version of three of Poe’s stories and a poem.

Tom brought his storytelling skills to “The Lighthouse,” “The Masque of the Red Death,” and “The Tell-Tale Heart,” giving us a performance that had many in the audience gasping with terror and laughing at the absurdity of Poe’s ability to create a
surreal world.

The applause at the end showed how much everyone had enjoyed the evening, and I hope the rest of his tour is as successful as our night in the Chillingham Arms.

A Bit Crack would like to make a special mention of Jane Young who delighted us all by hosting the evening for the first time. We hope it will be the first of many.
